A deliberately narrow starting area

This hub begins with San Francisco and nearby lowland Bay Area communities. It does not cover the entire coast, inland valleys, higher hills, or desert climates. Southern California coastal gardeners should use their own county guidance rather than importing the dates discussed here.

Even this smaller area needs distinctions. UC Master Gardeners provide separate hot, sunny, and foggy calendars for San Mateo and San Francisco counties. Select the description that fits your location; a county name alone may not tell you which calendar to open.

Choose the crop and the local window together

Start with one cool-season vegetable you want to eat. Look up whether the local recommendation refers to sowing seed or setting out transplants. Then check the crop's container needs before allocating space.

Check the winter version of your patio

A summer observation does not describe winter sunlight. Look for shade cast by buildings and railings before placing a long-term crop. Include the path you need for watering and harvesting when you sketch the arrangement.

UC's Contra Costa patio guidance notes both changing winter light and the need to water pots that rainfall does not reach. Use those principles to inspect your own location, while recognizing that inland Contra Costa conditions are not identical to the foggy coast.

Make watering an observation, not a season label

Label pots under an overhang separately from exposed containers in your garden notes. That distinction gives you a useful starting point after a rainstorm. Check the potting mix before deciding whether to irrigate.

For the first season, keep a short record of the crop, planting method, location, and result. Include a description of sun and shelter rather than simply writing 'Bay Area.' Return to the local calendar when replacing a finished crop, and use our winter-watering article to reconsider the irrigation routine. A mild regional description does not remove the need to follow cold-weather forecasts.
